1️⃣ Calls to Pitch

(Up to $1,000) Beer Writers | The North American Guild of Beer Writers is now accepting applications for its 2024 Diversity in Beer Writing Grant. The grant pays reporters to tell stories that showcase diversity and inclusion—in all its forms and challenges—within beer. Chosen writers will receive payment of $0.50 per word for their work, up to $1,000. More info here. Application deadline is July 8. Submit applications here

($800) Bolts | Bolts would love to hear your pitches! They’re always seeking to work with freelancers to report on critical voting rights and criminal justice stories across the United States. They encourage pitches that fit their mission to grow coverage of the local and state politics, elections, policymaking, and organizing that shape these issues—think of county prosecutors and sheriffs, secretaries of state and local election administrators, state legislators, municipal officials, and the activism brewing around them. Standard rate for a story with original reporting is $800. For stories that will be longer, take longer, or demand more work than their default assignment, an editor may offer a higher rate that reflects that larger scope. Pitch guide here. ($350) Sixty Inches From Center | Sixty x Black Lunch Table are seeking reviews and essays on Midwestern Black artists, especially those whose entries on Wikipedia lack sufficient citations. They’re looking for critical essays, journalistic takes, exhibition reviews (solo or two-person shows), and/or deep dives into the lives and practices of Black artists based in the Midwest. This call will prioritize those who have a clear commitment to researching, curating, or writing about Black cultural production and artistic practices. Pitch deadline is July 1 at 11:59 pm CST. ($290) Viator | Lauren is looking to commission two personal essays for Latinx Heritage Month for Viator. Must have a travel hook. Rate is $290. Pitch deadline is EOM June. Send pitches to [email protected] with clips and title suggestion

($250+) The Kitchn | Paulina is looking for pitches about reported TikTok trends, viral food movements people won’t stop talking about, and recipes that are blowing up on social media for The Kitchn.
