($1+ per word) Discover | Discover is open to pitches for their website and print magazine. They want stories that enlighten, inform and get readers excited about science. Their stories are grounded in research, but are driven by strong narratives, high reader interest and a conversational tone. Rates start at $1/word for print and $300/story for web. Pitch guide here. (~$1 per word) National Geographic | Starlight is looking for: Smart takes on news moments; Deep dives on fitness trends/how;the body works; Interesting history that is relevant today; Explainers on rising health concerns (bonus points if you can make anime/video games/supernatural lore natgeo). She’s linked some example articles in her thread. Her ideal pitch, in this order, is: 1. Sample hed/dek. Look at Nat Geo’s previous coverage & match their current style 2. Nut graph: The 5 W's, emphasis on the WHY ARE TELLING THIS STORY NOW (superlatives, global appeal, new take, timely news, etc). 3. Bio/clips. Starlight previously stated rates were ~$1 per word. ($1 CAD per word) TVO | Are you a freelance journalist? Do you like reporting on and writing about Ontario? Are you interested in health care, LTC, education, housing, disability, and/or climate change (list not at all exhaustive)? Sarah is looking for short features ($1/word) on such topics for TVO Today (The Agenda). ($400 CAD) Canadian Business | Xavier is a new editor at Canadian Business! For the next little bit, he’ll be commissioning and editing regular installments in the How I Made It series, as well as short features highlighting innovation by Canadian businesses. For How I Made it and Strategies, two series CB publishes regularly, the magazine offers $400 CAD for 1,000-1,200 words. Rates depend on a few other factors for longer stories. ($250 - $500) GRAMMY.com | GRAMMY.com is looking for pitches about diverse artists, genres and musical communities with national relevance. They’re mainly looking for larger culture features and lists highlighting the intersection of music with broader issues such as politics, history, health and technology. Rates range from $250 - $500 depending on type of article. Pitch guide here. ($250 - $300) Better Report | Medea is still looking for freelance commerce pitches for Better Report. She’s currently looking for buying guides covering a range of different items. Think “10 Must-Have Products for a Road Trip” rather than “Best Toasters.” Roundups with a personal angle are particularly great — did you seek out certain problem-solving products due to pain, accessibility, etc, and want to share those? They’ll also be experimenting with fall fashion + beauty roundups. If you previously sent those pitches, she will get back to you ASAP. Check out betterreport.com and then send your ideas to [email protected]. Include a clip or two and be sure to put “PITCH” somewhere in the subject so it gets filtered into the right inbox folder.
($200 - $500) Nonprofit Quarterly | For their Health Justice Issue, NPQ is looking for articles written by movement leaders and practitioners in the field that lay out the current state of health innovations, concerns of those working in the field of health, and visions for a socially just, ethical, and responsible direction forward. They’ve extended the pitch deadline to October 15. Pitch guide here
($175+) Business Insider | Stephanie is looking for some fresh pitches for BI’s Aldi, Costco, and Trader Joe's grocery diaries! You MUST be able to visit the store and snap photos of each item you're speaking about during your next trip! They would love to hear about why you like each product and what you use it for/why it's a great value. Fill out this form if interested. No deadline to reach out.
(£125) Plinth | Sammi is looking for some real talk about art and the wider culture over at Plinth. They apy £125 for an 800-word piece. Pitch guide here. Send pitches to [email protected] with the subject line “Pitch: [Your Story Idea].”
(£20) FUTBOLISTA Magazine | FUTBOLISTA Magazine is now accepting article pitches for ISSUE 13. They aim to release this edition by the end of the year. It will have no set theme, so please pitch all ideas. They offer payment of £20 plus a free digital PDF copy of the magazine. Pitch guide here. (Paid) Cosmopolitan UK | Brit Dawson edits the love and sex section at Cosmopolitan UK and she’s looking to expand her pool of freelancers who are comfortable writing first-person pieces about their dating (and sometimes sex) lives. Right now, she’s also specifically looking for London-based writers who fit this bill. No rate info was shared, but keep an eye out on this thread for Brit’s response.
