💸 $4,000 Grant Program for Our Readers 💸

As we’ve previously shared, The Writer’s Job partnered with Study Hall (link https://studyhall.xyz/) to let our readers know about an opportunity we feel is really special: a $4000 community grant program to help writers, journalists, and creators of all kinds start their dream project.

So what’s the catch? 🤔

The winner is required to post updates about what they’ve learned to the Study Hall community, which is a group of media workers and freelancers. This way, even those who don’t win can learn from and be inspired by the winner’s project. The grant is judged by Study Hall community members.

The inspiration for the program is based on Matt Saincome’s (head of Study Hall) own journey. He was a freelance journalist and then an editor at an alt-weekly before taking $800 of his own money and starting the satire websites The Hard Times and Hard Drive. He was in the right place at the right time and pretty quickly had millions of readers. He figured out the ad business and it turns out… everything his bosses were doing wasn’t that hard. And if journalists were the ones creating all the content – why shouldn’t they just own the website (and all of the upside of their hard work?)

After that experience he set off on a campaign to give any journalist or media worker who wants to start their own business a boost. He started at his own publication giving away grants to freelancers, and has now expanded to Study Hall, a media worker community founded 8 years ago. They have a Slack community and Listserv where Matt and thousands of other newsletter writers and journalists all help each other and give advice.

There’s only a week or so left before the grant deadline is here, but luckily the application process only takes a few minutes. Give it a shot and spread the word!
