One winner will receive a prize of $1,250 CAD and be published in the magazine's fall 2024 issue #228. Contest info here. Deadline is May 1. They’re looking for essays that are driven by sharp, surprising argumentative interventions in ongoing conversations. These may include: socially engaged cultural criticism; class-sensitive analysis; pieces that point out what’s being avoided or talked around in politics, media, arts, or even academia; upbeat cynicism; un-self-serious screeds; generous takedowns; entries from the margins. They focus on disinformation, online extremism and conspiracies, tech legislation, influencers and grifters, AI in politics, and anything strange or manipulative in that vein. (35,000 Rupees / ~$420 USD) Queer Beat | Queer Beat has an open pitch call for their Youth Storytelling Project. If you're a writer, journalist, or an artist below 30 years of age in India, this is for you! The Youth Storytelling Project will bring together eight young writers and artists, preferably queer, to create eight individual works about queer lives in India. They’re looking for pitches in English or Hindi, along with two samples of published text or art. Pitch guide here. Pitch deadline is March 14. They’re looking for reality TV coverage with sharp angles about what is and isn’t working; analysis on new comedy specials; trend pieces; anniversary look backs, interviews, and oral histories (the more specific, the better!); calling out a specific aspect of a buzzy new TV show. Not looking for straight reviews, and always want original reporting. Standard rate for essays and reported content starts at $300, but that can be negotiable depending on the assignment. She’s specifically looking for opinion/memoir pieces that touch on either a faith, ethical living, or justice theme, but she’s also open to interview/q&a ideas that will profile trailblazers in the same areas.
