($25 - $2,000) The Drift | Saliha Bayrak has joined The Drift as an associate editor! They’re looking for long form essays on culture & politics that make clear, surprising arguments, and very, very short reviews for their ‘Mentions’ section. Pitches should be relevant 5-6 months from now. The Drift usually doesn’t take personal essays or straightforward reviews of singular pieces of art. ($500 - $750) Slate | Tony is looking for pitches for personal and reported essays with a tech bent for Slate. How does technology impact your life, work, or worldview? What are the surprising/shocking/weird ways that tech is shifting our everyday lives? Check out Tony’s Twitter thread for example articles. Rates vary depending on scope of the assignment. Typically $500-$750 for features between 1000-1500 words. Can offer more depending on the story. No deadline. Send pitches to [email protected]
($100 - $400) The Polis Project | The Polis Project is launching a culture vertical, and they want your reviews, cultural criticism, interviews and features. Arts & entertainment are the most powerful way to shape political ethos and in this era of manufactured consent and propaganda, The Polis Project is interested in creating a counter-narrative of resistance. Their culture stories will be global, so they welcome pitches from writers all over the world, particularly the global south. They are looking for 1) Reviews & Criticism on books, film, art, & TV — especially keen on title from small presses that do not have a marketing machine behind them as well as underrepresented authors & artists (rate is $150-$250); 2) Cultural Criticism — analyses that explore cultural phenomena, trends, and political themes (rate is $150-$250); 3) Interviews — in-depth conversations with cultural figures & thinkers discussing their work, influences, etc. (rate is $100); 4) Features — including profiles of cultural figures set within a clear political context. They welcome stories on language, art, place, people, and any other interesting narratives on how we live (rate is $150-$250). ($250) Men’s Journal | Drinks writers! Chris is assigning a lot of liquor op-eds and essay pitches in the coming months. ($250) Network Weaver | Network Weaver is accepting pitches for their fourth BIPOC Editorial Series which aims to amplify the voices of BIPOC network weavers, connectors, leaders, and mappers. They invite community workers, builders, carers, and anyone reimagining network leadership practices through a lens of liberation to write them into the future. This season, they ask each of their contributors two questions: 1) What inspired you to write this particular piece? 2) What does liberation mean to you?
